Whether you are new to coloured pencils or an established artist, there will always be a particular brand you will love using above all others.

Even if you are just starting out and want to find your perfect set of coloured pencils, this blog is the one for you.

I have been a coloured pencil artist for over five years and I know how overwhelming it can be, with so many to choose from.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING COLOURED PENCILS

  • How easily blendable are they?
  • How vibrant are the pencils when the colour is laid down?
  • How durable are they to breaking?

THE TOP 3 BRANDS THAT MOST COLOURED PENCIL ARTISTS USE

1/ Faber-Castell Polychromos

These are the most popular brand amongst established coloured pencil artists and one of my favourites too.

They are rated highly in the art community and are a great set to start out with.

WHY I LIKE THEM

  • They blend well
  • They are durable. So not many breakages
  • They have a large colour collection
  • They have lovely, vibrant colours

Although the large set can be expensive, you can break down the expense and buy smaller sets to begin with.

2/ Prismacolor Premier Soft Core

This brand is also a favourite amongst coloured pencil artists.

They are a lot softer than Polychromos, so they don’t hold a sharp point for as long as the Polychromos.

WHY I LIKE THEM

  • They blend very well
  • They are durable to an extent. (Lead breaks easily because of the softness of the lead)
  • They have a great colour range

These pencils are expensive but as I mentioned earlier, it might be best to buy smaller, affordable ones to begin with.

I tend to use Polychromos and Prismacolour most often. However, I am trying out more brands lately.

3/ CARAN D’ACHE LUMINANCE

These pencils are very expensive and going by the ones I have tried, they are beautiful to use. I do find the pencils running out faster than the previous ones and they need constant sharpening. But this is due to the softness of the lead. They have a buttery softness to them and they are wonderful to use.

WHY I LIKE THEM

  • They have a creamy, buttery consistency when laying down colour and blending with them
  • They blend beautifully
  • They have a great colour collection
  • They are light fast, so they won’t fade over time.

OTHER PENCILS THAT ARE WORTH A MENTION ARE

1/ BLACK WIDOW

Even though these pencils are not considered to be artists-grade pencils and are not lightfast, I really really like them. They are great quality pencils and I am slowly building up my collection.

BLACK WIDOW SETS INCLUDE

As I have not used any other pencil brands yet, it would not be right to recommend any others, but as soon as I get a new pencil set, I will let you know how good or bad they are as soon as I can.
