I believe that using the right pencils from the beginning of your journey is important. What is the point of using low grade pencils when you are starting out? The point is that you need to use pencils that will give you results as they will help you to get better and hone your skills.

But where to look?

When I buy my pencils it is usually via Amazon but have also used when I cannot get them from Amazon. The coloured pencil shop is a reputable place to get your coloured pencils and I trust this site fully.

Which brands are best?

There are two brands that I use at present and I have never had any problems with them. These brands are Prismacolour and Polychromos. Additionally, I have used Rembrandt in the past and I still have some of their pencils which I use now and again.

Some helpful ideas and tips

Being serious about being a coloured pencil artist helped me to make up my mind to get the full sets from my two top brands. I chose Prismacolour and Polychromos because they are the most popular amongst coloured pencil artists.

Below are the sets that I bought:

It can get expensive too buy the full sets so it might make more sense to purchase some smaller sets to start you off, like the ones below.

There are other brands to consider like Caran D’Ache but like I have said, it would be a good idea to buy a smaller set to see if they suit you. At the end of the day it is you that is using these pencils and if you don’t like how they feel then it it is wasting you money.
