Prismacolor: My new best friend

As an artist, I am always looking for professional standard products so that I can continually improve my drawings and take my art to another level. In the past I have always used Polychromos for my coloured pencil art after reading a review that they were the best brand to use as an artist who wants to sell their work. Don’t get me wrong, they still are among my favourites to use and I will continue to use them in the future.

However, it was just the other day that I realised the variety of colours I had available in my pencil box was dwindling quite a bit and I need to update it fast. I made a mental note of re-ordering some coloured pencils and went back to working on my drawing: BELOW

I picked up a lemon coloured pencil and started using it, but something felt different. This is the conversation that I had with myself while using the pencil.

“Wow, this feels better, it must be because I sharpened it sharper.”

I hadn’t sharpened it any sharper than the others I was using.

” I wonder if it’s the paper.”

It wasn’t the paper because I had used it many times before.

When I examined the paper further, I realised it was in fact a prismacolor that I had got as a sample in an art subscription box I get each month.

Anyway, I finished my drawing and decided to have a look online for some prismacolor reviews. I was amazed to find that most professional artists used these pencils more than the polychromos. (well they did in the reviews I looked at anyway). My decision was finally made and it was then that I placed my order from Amazon for my new set of pencils.

Now that I’ve been using them instead of my usual pencils for a few weeks now, I can honestly say that it was the best decision I have ever made.

So here is why I fell in love with them.

1/ Compared to polychromos, the prismacolors blend so much better with a softer creamier feel to them. I also discovered while using them that I did not need to use my Spectrum Noir blending fluid as much either. (The blending fluid is unavailable at the moment but will be doing a review on it when it becomes available again)

2/ The colours blend and layer very well and it didn’t take much effort with a blending pencil.

3/ The colours are so much more vibrant and strong on the paper and the variety of colours in the 150 set I purchased was vast.

4/ the box that they are presented in is pretty and sturdy and I discovered that if you flip the lid it raises the box for easy access to the pencils

Although the pencils are a bit on the pricey side, I really do think that they were a great investment and that they will last me a long time. I will now be able to create art that not only looks better but will be less time consuming too.

Here is what I created when using them for the first time.
