With the new year just around the corner, many people will be thinking of some new year’s resolutions and setting goals for 2021.
I have been guilty of making resolutions, only to fail a few weeks later.
Today I am going to share with you the reasons why they failed and hopefully prevent you from making the same mistakes that I did.
1/ I wasn’t clear enough
This has been my top reason why my goals haven’t worked out in the past. I was too vague at what I wanted. For example: I wanted to lose weight at the beginning of this year. But just telling myself that wasn’t enough. I needed to know how much weight, by when, why etc.
2/ I just looked at the end result
As with the weight loss example, I just looked at the big picture and didn’t get specific enough on the smaller steps. I was doomed to fail before I started without knowing all the bits in between.
3/ I gave up too soon
The reason I gave up was because I hadn’t got clear on what I wanted and how I was going to get there. I got bored and when I’m bored, I eat. So that goal actually made me gain weight and I felt like a complete failure.
4/ They didn’t excite me enough
I didn’t make my weight loss goal exciting enough. Looking back know, I could have added some rewards for reaching certain milestones. For example, for every half stone I lost I could have rewarded myself something small to spur me on and keep me motivated and get me to the finish line sooner.
5/ I didn’t put the work in
And……the reason I didn’t put the work in was because
- I didn’t get clear enough of what the goal was
- I looked too far ahead and got impatient with no clear path to move me forward
- I gave up too soon because I got bored because…..
- The goal did not excite me enough to carry on
Now, when I want something like weight loss, I put the work in, I get specific, I have reward markers. I write it all down and create an action plan that I can check in with on a daily basis and track my performance. That way I have a much better success rate.
