The benefits of writing a bucket list

Have you ever watched the movie “The Bucket List”? It is about two terminally ill men (Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) who escape from a Cancer ward and head off on an adventure with a wish list: a list of things they want to do before they die.

I have seen this films many times and it always inspires me to add to my bucket list and start turning some of those dreams into reality.

2020 has been a tough year for many and it is because of the pandemic that has made it more important for me to start taking my bucket list seriously and work through it. 2021 is going to be a year of big dreams turning into reality, lots of successes and a much happier year than any other. I am already in the process of making plans and setting goals.

“So what’s the point of a bucket list?” I hear you say. well, to answer that question, I am going to give you seven benefits and then you can decide if a bucket list is a must for you.

1/ Excitement

Just thinking about all those things you want to do, learn or experience will no doubt get you excited. All those places you want to explore, all those people you want to meet, all those possibilities waiting for you and the opportunities just around the corner can become real if you just sit down and get them out of your head onto paper.

2/ Motivation

Creating your own bucket list gets you motivated. As you write your list you suddenly realise the urgency of some of your dreams. They stand out and cry out for some attention. You then decide that now is the time to start working on those dreams. That motivation, that excitement spurs you on.

3/ Creative thinking

As you are writing, you notice that more ideas come to you, dreams that you have forgotten are remembered and you start looking at ways you can make them real. This is because you have started exercising that creative muscle and you know what happens when you work a muscle? Yes, it grows, bigger, better, stronger.

4/ Happy

Because you are writing down all the things that make you come alive, those things that are important to you, you can only feel positive thoughts. The excitement you feel makes you smile and that feeling lasts long after you stop writing and take action steps to realising your dreams. It doesn’t matter what is on your list, it is yours and no one elses.

5/ Purpose

A bucket list will give your life a purpose. You now have things to work towards. You can choose anything that is on that list from walking the great wall of China to having a spa day.

6/ Comfort zone

Your bucket list will take you out of your comfort zone as you create action steps that will move you closer to one or more of your wishes. You will find new ways of doing things and this will give you more confidence and belief in yourself.

7/ Success

The very act of writing all your dreams, wishes and desires down has a higher success rate than just daydreaming about them. You won’t forget them once they are written down. You can dip in and out of your list whenever you want to. Don’t keep it all in your head. Get it on that paper and start turning your dreams into reality.
