With Christmas just mere weeks away it is so easy to get stressed about it. For me it’s the stress of the amount of money I have to go through to buy everything I need. I don’t begrudge buying presents but I do tend to overdo it at this time of the year. Just trawling around the shops can get my heart pounding and getting the feeling of overwhelm.
Even if it is just for one afternoon and it is not work related I will get out my paints and start creating just for the fun of it. I don’t plan what I am going to paint. I just let the process carry me along to the final piece.
Here’s how I do it:
1/ I collect together all the paints that I feel like using.
- Quick tip: Choose a maximum of 4 colours that jump out to you. It is so much better if you keep it simple. I have used just two colours (black and white) and painted with them on grey paper with some great results.
I am loving these at the moment Kuretake Gansai Tambi Japenese Watercolours @£28.08 a great Christmas gift for the Vegan artist in the family
2/ Choose the paper that you want to use.
- You don’t have to stick to normal paper either. Left over wallpaper is a good choice as well as, newspaper and pages of old books. Even old sheet music looks cool too.
I am loving Strathmore Watercolour Paper @£16.97 A great Christmas present for the arty Vegan
3/ Start painting. You don’t need to know what you are going to paint. It is more about getting colour onto the paper and to free your mind. Just create what feels right in the moment.
For example: The painting below was created by mixing a few colours onto the paper and letting it dry. When I looked at it later I could see patterns emerging that suggested little flowers, so I added them in. I was pleasantly surprised by what I had achieved and that helped me with the de-stressing process.
Don’t let the run up to Christmas get you down. Only buy what you can afford and don’t let yourself get sucked in to the commercialisation of it all. After all Christmas is for being with the ones that lift you up and make you smile. Well That is what it means to me any way.
Let me know in the comments how you De-stress during the Christmas holiday season.
